Editorial Reviews:

The national bestseller that shocked the nation--The Death of the West is an unflinching look at the increasing decline in Western culture and power.

The West is dying. Collapsing birth rates in Europe and the U. S., coupled with population explosions in Africa, Asia and Latin America are set to cause cataclysmic shifts in world power, as unchecked immigration swamps and polarizes every Western society and nation.
The Death of the West details how a civilization, culture, and moral order are passing away and foresees a new world order that has terrifying implications for our freedom, our faith, and the preeminence of American democracy.

The Death of the West is a timely, provocative study that asks the question that quietly troubles millions: Is the America we grew up in gone forever?

Summary: My introduction to the American Right, but time shows its flaws too much
Comment: I was introduced to "The Death of the West" in a strange way. I was a student of geopolitics at the University of Melbourne who was curious about and somewhat baffled by the September 11 terrorist attacks. At the time a devotee of radical Trotskyist groups Socialist Worker and Resistance, but the details I found looking at the roots of the September 11 attacks in practical textbooks made me realise it was impossible that there would in the future be enough radical leftists to destroy capitalism.

Although I was and remain suspicious, I will admit that both when I first read it and today "The Death of the West" is by no means an unenlightening read. The people whom Buchanan blames for the problems faced by the West today are not even mentioned, let alone studied, by many other people on the Right. Although the Intercollegiate Studies Institute did list Marcuse at number four on their "Fifty Worst Books of the Twentieth Century", he is not mentioned at all by either Human Events' "Ten Most Harmful Books" or Benjamin Wiker in "10 Books That Screwed Up the World".

Given that my knowledge of culture has grown since first reading "The Death of the West" to show just how much more advanced sexual libertinism and secularism are in Europe, Canada and New Zealand than in the United States, Buchanan's omission of the grossly overestimated Alfred Kinsey seems refreshing. So too is his point on how ideas of sexual libertinism had actually taken over European academia long before the "Sixties". He illustrates this showing how Georg Lukacs did this in Bela Kun's Marxist regime in Hungary, and the even-less-known Dr. Alfred Hoche in Germany during the same era. His mentioning of Wilhelm Reich, whose prototypes of the sexual revolution came out six years before "Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male", adds further to a historical question often treated (even by its supporters) too dogmatically. Buchanan's knowledge of homosexuality in the Weimar Republic also helps him understand present-day cultural differences between Europe and North America quite well.

However, reading other authors on the Right makes Buchanan seem dubious much too often for me to be able to give a really strong recommendation to "The Death of the West". Austrian economists, like Hans-Hermann-Hoppe in Democracy: The God That Failed, have severely questioned his big-government conservative strategies as unworkable, showing that conservatism can only thrive with limited government. My own research also shows that Buchanan's question "Is the death of a religious-based culture inevitable once a society reaches general affluence?", should be answered as "The death of a religious-based culture is inevitable once a society can no longer sustain economic agriculture" (ie. agriculture without subsidies), a point which explains the extreme conservatism of suburban and exurban Australia and Red America in comparison to the rest of the developed world.

From another angle, writers such as Rod Dreher and Robert Inchausti have shown clearly that many Catholics and other devoutly orthodox Christians identified in the 1950s and 1960s with the counterculture that Buchanan deplores in a broad-stroke manner, even if (as with Dorothy Day) they vehemently disagreed with its sexual aims. Although there were always aims of sexual liberation in parts of the counterculture, these were perhaps less central between the 1950s and early 1970s than they became after the "punk" and rap revolutions. Many in the 1960s counterculture were not hostile to the classic literary canon now deplored by most literature professors, as can be seen by the number of literary adaptations in 1960s and early 1970s pop music. Writers like Dreher, Inchausti and Wendell Berry think (with considerable justification) in fact that the type of secession Buchanan says conservatives need is in many ways similar to what the 1950s counterculture wanted.

Also, Buchanan does not realise that fertility declines are becoming extremely general throughout the world, with only the United States itself, Australia and sub-Saharan Africa in any way exempt. Many Muslim countries already have very low fertility and there is no reason to suppose they will level out at a rate higher than Europe today. My point above about how only those nations where agriculture can be carried on without subsidies maintain religious-based societies has a great deal of justification based on recent demographic trends. It is simply uneconomic elsewhere to raise families because of scarcity of flat land and already-dense populations.

Other writers are also quite often more effective than Buchanan at dealing with issues he does cover in "The Death of the West". This is especially true of the problems of feminism, which Buchanan mentions but Carrie Lucas in one of the better Politically Incorrect Guides does a better job. Similarly with demographic issues, Phillip Longman's "The Empty Cradle" is the place to turn. There are also many other books about the roots of what I willingly term "modern European culture", which can be rooted in Hobbes, Nietzsche, Marx and Mill whilst being totally and utterly dissociated from the Christianity Buchanan professes and praises.

All in all, "The Death of the West" has, probably, rather more evidence against it than in favour. If you know the American Right well, you will see that there are many questionable points in this book, and the politically correct will hate it for many more reasons. Moreover, many of these reasons are justified, and today I cannot give the book a recommendation beyond reading it once over.

Summary: Superb expose of Marxist ideologies underpinning western culture.
Comment: With characteristic precision, Mr. Buchanan details the confluence of Marxist ideologies, Hell bent (literally) on permanently destroying any vestige of Judeo-Christian influence in Western European and American culture.

Promoted through the cooperative support of the Mass Media, and featuring such pet causes as the Civil Rights movement, Afro-centrism, the birth control pill, the push for legalized abortion, free love, Women's Liberation, gay rights, and provided with a lap dog, tongue hanging, captive audience of bored, disaffected, post war affluent youth, this subversive coterie virtually created the world we now call "politically correct."

Never mind that their agenda boasted and promoted sins and social maladies long considered anathema by previous generations.

The result we see all around us--the stench of the deconstuctionist, high tech, sexually libertine, post Christian West. No it's not a pretty picture.

Yes, the cultural well has been poisoned, but Mr. Buchanan has at least hung out a warning sign--"Don't Drink From This Well!"

Highly recommended.

Summary: An important trend that is often ignored by the mainstream media
Comment: If birth rates are the best indication of a how much a people values itself, it's customs and it's traditions, then certainly Europeans and White Americans are in the pangs of self-loathing and self hatred. Nations and cultures usually die from internal causes and certainly the European way of life is rotten at the core. Europe and the American culture inherited from Europe is literally suicidal. Bucahanan does an outstanding job of laying out all of the grim statistics. The most important statistic is this: birth rates are exploding in the third world and developing nations while birth rates are exceedingly miniscule in the most developed nations of Europe, North america and Japan. What this means for the future no one can be certain but it is certainly an important phenomenon (maybe the most important trend in all of sociology) and one that for politically correct reasons does not receieve its due consideration in the mainstream media.
