Customer Rating: Summary: A Shame Comment: Okay, so the book was a bit derivative and you could tell it was his first. It still deserved a way better movie! To be fair, there are a few good, even excellent moments to be had here--I tip my hat to Mr. Irons for most of them, who I think really captured the spirit of Brom's character, and to the graphic designers who created Saphira for the rest--their care and love really shows through. The CGI Saphira is a thing of beauty.
The rest of the movie, however, is simply not worth your time to watch. The plot has been mangled beyond logic and almost beyond recognition after the first half hour. The supporting cast of characters have been downgraded to ridiculous 2D cutouts. For example, Saphira, who in the books is a strong-willed character of her own has been reduced to Eragon's chauffeur and attack dog rather than his partner. Similarly, the characters of arya and murtagh have been gutted. Arya has been reduced to a swooning princess from a strong female character, and murtagh's been turned into a goth. Ridiculous. The dwarf city, which paolini describes lavishly and gives a sense of grandeur and glory, becomes a dank cave. Even the whole message behind the climactic points of the story aren't safe. Eragon in the book summons up his last strength to defeat Durza to save his friends. Eragon in the movie has Saphira do a cool trick with her tail and then gets the guy, no problem. Oh wait, saphira's hurt? Uh oh!
All in all, the producers took excellent movie material and turned it into a campy movie. As campy movies go, eragon is pretty good, but come in with practically any expectations and you will be disappointed. The plot and the supporting characters and the dwarf city are pretty poor. Mr. Speelers did a good job of portraying eragon's roughhousing with his cousin and his overconfident brattiness, but not his growth as a character. Saphira looks absolutely beautiful but her character is so weak she would have been better as a set of posters. Brom was great--too bad he wasn't there for more of the movie, as it deteriorates dramatically after his exit. (The only acceptable one of the movie's embellishments on the story is Brom's dying ride on Saphira, which was in the spirit of the book if not the text.)
Final verdict: rent at movie store, be sure to warn kids or adults who have enjoyed the book to have low expectations, relax and enjoy the CGI dragon with a sense of humor and a big bowl of buttered popcorn.
Customer Rating: Summary: Yikes! Better luck next time? Comment: First and foremost, I need to mention that I've never read the book, although I hear it was much better than the movie.
I don't know who wrote the script, but I've seen better writing in bad fanfiction pieces. The writing is uninspiring, and at times it's downright cheesy (are we together... as one.../ into the sky, to win or die). Some of the lines were supposed to be inspiring but they usually just made me laugh. It's a shame, too, because I see it as a story with great potential. From what I've heard about the book, I doubt Chris Paolini intended for it to be watered down into an 80-minute extravaganza of what might could be called special effects.
Eragon himself seems to be just a spoiled teenager who never uses his head. I think the actor who played him could have done a good job if he had more to work with.
I saw two somewhat redeeming points to the movie: Saphira the dragon was very good. And Brom, played by Jeremy Irons, added a refreshing bit of good acting to this movie.
I think if Eragon had relied more on good writing and acting and less on special effects and gimmicks, it could have been an excellent movie, but as it is, the movie might even be worse than Dragonheart. I need to read the books now and hope that they're better than the movie.
Customer Rating: Summary: book vs. movie Comment: This would be a fine movie if I had never read the book. The movie took away some of the most important elements and details of the book (such as Arya not even being an elf in the movie, and the obvious lack of dwarves.) An Eragon movie created in the style of the book series has so much potential that was lost in this cinematic effort.
In defense of the movie, my husband and son loved it because they had never read the original story. (They have both recently listened to Eragon on Cd and now refuse to watch the movie ever again.)
In summary, read the book or watch the movie. Don't do both!
Customer Rating: Summary: Completely botched the book Comment: This is the first time that I can ever remember that I walked out of the theatre angry. I had loved the book and found that the movie completely botched the story. The producers added things that were rediculous and removed characters and scenes that are vital for the book. I know that they were just trying to make it more view friendly (such as adding the love interest between Arya and Eragon) but the book sold well without this and I felt that it drastically diminished Arya's character. Even if I had not read the book, I would still be disappointed with this movie. A lot of questions are not answered and the flow was very poor.
Customer Rating: Summary: Trashed... Comment: I JUST rented this movie.
I was pissed off within the first five minutes of watching it.
When a movie is turned into a book you know things will be changed and messed around with, it's expected... However... They did SO much changing with this the only things that resemble the book are the characters names, the places.
I seriously didn't make it even thirty minutes into the movie. Everything's changed in it from what I did see. Note: Spoilers ahead.
In the book when Roran leaves to go earn money so he can ask Katrina to marry him? (It's been a while since I read the book, I think that was her name x3) Well, this time he leaves just so he won't be recruited into the army, I saw no sign of her whatsoever. The elves? No pointy ears. Saphira's egg? The only resemblance I saw between it and the book was the fact that it was blue. And don't get me started on how all the actors look.. none of them look fit to play their roles.
And to top it all off? This movie looks like it was made for FOUR YEAR OLDS. I'm surprised I found it in the family section, and not the kids section.
I read reviews that called this movie crappy, trust me, they're way off. It's a LOT worse than that. Don't even bother renting it. If you know someone who has the movie and you're just too curious then borrow it from them. But I SWEAR if you rent or buy this movie you WILL regret it...
I want nothing more than to go down to Block Buster and DEMAND my money back, if I even thought there was a chance they would refund my money, I'd do it.
Don't rent this movie, it's honestly the most butchered movie I've EVER seen.
